Benjamin Franklin Half Dollars The 1948 through 1963 production of Ben Franklin half dollars represents one of the shortest regular series in modern American coin history. The assassination of President Kennedy in 1964 led Congress to issue a new half dollar in his memory in early 1964, limiting the Franklin half dollar to a 15 year run. The coin is made of 90% silver and was produced at the Philadelphia Mint (no mint mark), the Denver Mint (D) and the San Francisco Mint (S), the mint marks being visible on the reverse side of the coin above the image of the Liberty Bell.
